Curriculum outline

The School of Engineering Science has an integrated four-year educational program providing education in liberal arts subjects, basic engineering subjects and specialized engineering subjects covering a wide range of branches of engineering science.

After entering a specialized course, each student receives education relevant to his/her future specialized field. the Mechanical and Systems Engineering Course offers a systematic educational program in which students can learn dynamics and properties of material, heat and fluid and their basic quantum physics, as well as the analysis and design/production/control of mechanical systems, aiming to cultivate engineers and researchers capable of playing leading roles in various areas related to engineering science.

Unique subjects

The aim of the Mechanical and Systems Engineering Course is to develop personnel who are capable of understanding phenomena theoretically and combining various elements for manufacturing. The Course's educational system consists of analytical subjects focusing on dynamics, creative subjects such as design, and graduation research. This page introduces some of the creative subjects offered in the Mechanical and Systems Engineering Course; Exercise of Mechanical Design, Exercise of Machine Shop Practice, and Mechanical and System Engineering Laboratory.

Exercise of Mechanical Design 1, 2

Outline: The aim of this program is to have the students understand that design is the process of consolidating the concept of a product project, and to experience the attractiveness and comprehensiveness of design. All work including drafting, analysis, design, preparation and presentation is performed in teams, in which students can experience and understand the significance of acting in teams, not as individuals.

Exercise of Machine Shop Practice

Outline: In this class, students gain experience of machining processes using various machine tools. Students mainly practice production of the parts for Stirling engines, and evaluate performance after assembly. They also experience assembly/disassembly of commercially available diesel engines. At the same time, lectures concerning the engine principles, safety engineering and machine tools are provided.

Enrolled students: about 100

Mechanical and System Engineering Laboratory 1, 2, 3

Outline: In Experiments 1 and 2, students in small groups conduct experiments concerning metal materials, material dynamics, thermal dynamics, fluid dynamics, production, and general engineering, to learn experiment techniques and methods for analyzing experiment results. In Experiment 3, students design and produce line tracers. They make power circuits and various amplifier circuits, design and produce a vehicle body considering the positions of motors, tires and sensors, and create control programs using C-language, to conduct mechatronics-related experiments.

Exercise on Mechanical System Engineering

This program is for the third year students of the Mechanical and Systems Engineering Course. Students conduct exercises in small groups, based on themes selected from the latest topics in the basic or applied fields relating to mechanical systems. The themes may change every year.
